1 of a number of really fantastic items from the family relations of ROBERT SMITH c1859 of the city of York Cutler & Surgical Instrument Maker... later moved to Scarborough ... these items have been in their family for years and used as display items in their shops.... most of the items are 1 OFF UNIQUE items that you will never see again... made for the Industrial Exhibitions to show off the fine work and various skills the cutlers could produce...from the beautiful fine engraved and gilt pictures on the SCISSORS and cutlery knives etc ... from the MASSIVE oversized items to the MINIATURE items too.. working models if you like.. these items are all very rare and are NOT dangerous weapons.

Some of you may well be able to do abit more research into the family history and see that Robert Smith had two sons HENRY & GEORGE FREDERICK .. I have 3 documents listed as 1 lot in another listing in my ebay SHOP which are interesting, these include 2 FREEMAN of the CITY of YORK as well as an APPRENTICE for the son Geroge Frederick....dated from the 1859 era.

Then some of you will also be able to see that the MASSIVE .... 17 inch long oversized absolute stunning UNIQUE , horn handled 3 blade engraved YORK INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION 1879 by R. SMITH with a picture of the building all gilt....I was the UNDERBIDDER of this museum quality item at £5200 ...sold for £5400 ....that was before commission . the item I hope has gone to a good home.. which had an estimated auction price of £300-£500.

All these items are worthy of being in a good private collection and SOME are certainly MUSEUM quality items which as I keep saying are 1 off UNIQUE items ...some of them you will see MAY have what you think to be expensive prices... but an item is only worth as much as someone wants to pay for it , isnt it.... I am fortunate to go to some good live auctions where these sort of items occur and I tend to buy them.... they are sought after items.

I would be happy to sell the items singular or collective to a good science museum or even one of the Museums in York , Castle Museum or the Yorkshire Museum as the items do originate from there and are of course SOCIAL HISTORY items for all to see.. thing is ...I cannot give the items or donate them either as I have to buy items in live auctions to get them myself....but I am negotiable and have sold alot of unique and rare items to museums all over the world.

This is the mother of all CUT THROAT RAZORS......if you are a collector of such items then this would be the CENTRE PIECE of your collection... there will NOT be many of these made this size... certainly ONLY this one from this company for this year.....RARE as HENS TEETH as I would usually say!

As you can see it is MASSIVE ... it dwarfs any cut throat razor I have ever seen before.. and its made of steel ... with decoration along the main body and the handle too.... this is a real piece of SOCIAL HISTORY .... a SHOW OFF item of the cutlers work ....displayed and exhibited at the YORK INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION 1879 ... see the blade.. which is SHARP and will not take any prisoners... so do be carefull with it ... polished steel and the same shape as a small useable razor.. engraved and gilt ...with swirls and foliage with a picture of the BUILDING in YORK in the centre.. wording below.

The handle has R. SMITH .. CUTLER & C ....13 HIGH OUSEGATE YORK ....on the centre.. with foliage and swirls at the side too.

The steel has dark stains in places.. this item has been in the SCARBORO shop window of the SMITH cutlers for many years... it could soon be well ADMIRED once again in your private collection or a GRAND MUSEUM alike for all to see.

It is MASSIVE as I keep banging on about it.. its 17 inch long x 2 and half inch wide x nearly 1 and a 1/4inch deep at the nut and bolts holding it all together. .....when in the closed position...x 27 inch long when the blade is right out x 1 and 3/4inch wide blade...it all weighs approx.....1.178kilos... so not only is it long its chuffing heavy as well.!

This is not a dangerous weapon...it was made especially for a Victorian exhibition to show off the cutlers skill and not to be used.
